how to create an animated splash screen

i didn't know if i should put this here or under "Installation and Boot", but is it possible to use a custom animated splash screen in.. well any version of Kubuntu?

i watched Hackers, again, last night and started wondering how to make my own splash screen. i already know how to create a login screen but find the splash screen boring... i don't consider a loading/progress bar an "animated" splash screen.

any ideas?
