    Running kate as root

I want to be able to run kate with root privileges from my desktop. I set up a "link to application" with the application as kate (of course). I also went into the Advanced section of the Application section and selected "Run as a different user" with root as the user. But no luck: I still can't edit /etc/fstab. What am I missing?

Funny thing is, I think I did have this working a while ago!

You can also use "kdesudo kate" as the command in your "link to application"

When I create this in "Menu Editor" it works with just kate as the command, check "Run as different user" but do not specify a user.

          it did work, but oddly

It turns out that I could edit /etc/fstab by opening the /etc/ directory and then clicking on /etc/fstab. But for some reason I couldn't do it by typing /etc/fstab into the filename box, which is what I had been doing all along.
