    Anyone have any ideas??

Re: Update troubles - unmet dependencies and failed connections

you wouldn't by chance using the kde4 remix of HH and atemping to "upgrade" to kde4.2.x ?
if so you will need to remove libplasma2 to complete your "upgrade"

Re: Update troubles - unmet dependencies and failed connections

      I think
      sudo aptitude -f full-upgrade
will probably fix this. If not it may be that the repository is missing a file. Is hardy still using kde 4.0.2? I don't see any backports lines in your update. Would that get you a newer (and undoubtedly better) KDE4?

        Nope. Plain old Hardy.

Probably (although you can also use 'sudo apt-get dist-upgrade'), but the errors seem to include a few connection errors, perhaps due to busy servers or other hickups. Trying again might help.

As far as I know (I'm not 100% sure) there are no KDE4.2 (or 4.1) repos for hardy. For a newer KDE4, one has to upgrade to intrepid (or jaunty)

You mean hardy with KDE3? then you probably shouldn't go ahead with the update, because it is trying to install KDE4 packages. What extra repositories are you using?

Ah. Hmm. Ultimately, I'd like to upgrade to intrepid (then jaunty when it's released), but the dist upgrade button didn't do anything in Adept Manager. I figured maybe I needed to update everything first....

sudo aptitude -f --full-upgrade is a at least downloading most of the packages - the connection is failing on a few of them, though.

Re: Update troubles - unmet dependencies and failed connections

When you want to upgrade you can edit your sources.list and replace hardy with intrepid, run aptitude update and aptitude -f full-upgrade.

Or you can try something I recently heard about which is
                sudo update-notifier-kde -u
                You would want to run
                update-notifier-kde --help
to see what it does. I just saw that this is on the Ubuntu webpage for upgrading to Jaunty and I have never tried it. I am not even sure it is in Hardy or what it will do, so if you try it please tell me what it does.

Re: Update troubles - unmet dependencies and failed connections

instructions for upgrading from 8.04 to 8.10 can be found here
                  http://www.kubuntu.org/news/8.10-release

after you update to 8.10 your gonna want to upgrade to kde 4.2 instructions here
                  http://www.kubuntu.org/news/kde-4.2

before you upgrade to kde 4.2 you will need to remove libplasma2. (see step 3 of kde4.2 instructions)

also you might want to install synaptic. the adept in kde4.x is not as good as the one in 3.5 (yet)

hope that helps w/ your upgrade

Yea, this is what I tried at first. After typing in "kdesudo adept-manager --dist-upgrade" into the Run Command window and clicked Run, nothing happened.

Then I tried opening Adept Manger and clicking the Full Upgrade button. Again, nothing happens. That's why I'm trying it this way.

                    EDIT:
Well, call me a liar. I must have typed it in wrong. It's working now that I tried it from the command line vs. the Run Command window.

                    Thanks for the help.

When using kdesudo in the run dialog, use quotation around the command you're going to run (otherwise kdesudo might think that the options are for it, rather than for the command)
                      Code:
                      kdesudo "adept-manager --dist-upgrade"

                        Ah. Thanks.

I had run sudo adept_manager --dist-upgrade from the command line and it proceeded as expected.

It had downloaded something like 1080 out of 1120 packages before I had left work last night. When I came in this morning, It had aborted with the following error:

                        Code:
                        Error during update
A problem occurred during the update. This is usually some sort of network problem, please check your network connection and retry.

Um... yea. I'm pretty sure my internet connection is fine since it downloaded all of the packages and I'm entering this from the same computer.

you should be able to run from the command line
                            Code:
                            sudo apt-get upgrade
and get an error saying you have uncommited changes please run this to fix it (sorry not at my kubuntu machine atm)

but that will finish your upgrade .(i had to do that once or twice my self)

Huh. This is just weird. The Distribution Upgrade window is sitting at Getting new packages - Fetching file 1107 of 1125. It's been hanging there for a few hours now.

If I run 'sudo apt-get upgrade' I get the following:

                              Code:
                              $ sudo apt-get upgrade

                              Reading state information... Done
You might want to run `apt-get -f install' to correct these.
