screen resolution and no sound(PARTLY SOLVED)

Kubuntu 8.04.2 installs and uses the native screen resolution (1920x1200) all ok.
I reduced the screen to 1280x768 to increase the size of the text.
When I rebooted the resolution changed to 640x480, and this was the maximum size listed in the control center
I wanted Flash 10 for Sesame street. I uninstalled flash 9 and downloaded flash 10 from Adobe.
I got video but no sound.(this was with resolution at 1920x1200)
Googled both resolution and no sound.
quite a few posts, some with extensive cli instructions
    could not solve.
My computer(old) will not install 8.10 or any of the derivatives that I have tried
Apart from getting a new computer (later this year all being well) I will look for a distro that will work now
ps. if anyone knows of a LIVE CD that incorporates flash 10 please let me know
    Thanks

Re: screen resolution and no sound(PARTLY SOLVED)

I pressed "esc" on booting and then selected "fix X" and recovered my native resolution.
Now I have to experiment to see if I can get a lower resolution to work
    Still no sound.
    Any information would be apprediated
    Thanks

Now I have to experiment to see if I can get a lower resolution to work

I tried setting 1680x1050 it changed to 640x480
      1600x1200 reverted to 1920x1200
      1440x900 changed to 640x480
      1400x1050 changed to 640x480
      800x600 changed to 640x480
      720x450 reverted to 1920x1200

      no success!

Do you know whaat sound card you have?

        "lspci" should show you.

Does "lsmod | grep snd" show any modules loaded?

          EDIT
I upgraded to Kubuntu 8.10 (took about 5 hours!)
This seems to have solved my resolution problem. At least I can use 1440x900.
          BUT
8.10 uses KDE4.1 which seems half broken
Guess I will have to wait for KDE 4.2 in Kubuntu 9.04
          Thanks again

Re: screen resolution and no sound(PARTLY SOLVED)

You do have a sound card listed. It is built into your motherboard

0000:00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH 4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 02)

The fact that the snd modules are loaded indicates that the system recognized you audio hardware and installed the drivers for it. This means you are most of the way there.

            First do
            sudo aptitude install kdemultimedia

This will pull in some plugins and standard applications.

Now you need to find out why you do not hear it. First you should open kmix and make sure you have volume turned up. This may be a PCM channel or the Master volume. Make sure they are not muted and are turned up. Then be ready to turn them down if things suddenly get loud.

            Now select K->System Settings->Multimedia

You should see a list of audio output types on the left and devices on the right. I expect you will see one for HDA Intel and one for Pulseaudio. Select one on the left, Music would be good, and then Intel HDA on the right. Test should light up so try it.

you can install kde 4.2.1 in kubuntu 8.10. to do so you want to follow these instructions
              http://www.kubuntu.org/news/kde-4.2

now when you get to step 3.
              sudo apt-get remove libplasma2

after install you should be able to log right in to kde4.2 after you restart X (crtl+alt+backspace) or log out and back in ....
