    Kontact / Kaddressbook: cannot edit contacts - SOLVED

    Cannot edit contact, either with double click on contact, by clicking the relevant icon, or with shortcut. This applies either I open Kaddressbook from within Kmail or from Summary. Once entered, a contact appears to be immutable. I have uninstalled and purged Kontact, to no avail. Maybe I have to remove my addresses and start with a "clean" slate. How do I do that? And would it help?

    Any ideas?

    check permission for ~/.kde/share/apps/kabc and the files it contains...

      ~/.kde/share/apps/kabc
      Owner: can view and modify
      Others: forbidden

      There are 23 .vcf files, and they seem to be read/write for owner, read for others
      4 directories, permissions as for the parent directory.

        Right, what I meant was find out who the owner is and what rights the directory and files have. To do so please enter the following commands and post the output:

            Thank you. Well, that looks okay. Any other ideas out there?

            You might want to try stopping kontact, renaming .../kabc to .../kabc.bak and restarting kontact. Does it work now? Just clutching at straws here...

              Nope, did not work. Odd thing was that when a new /kabc was generated, the old address book was found and in place. I rebooted and renamed again, and there was no doubt.

              Thanks, Toad, for the effort!!

              There must be some other file, somewhere, making trouble.

                Hi again Toad.
                I have pursued my own line of investigation, as they say, and have solved the problem in my own layman's way, for the time being, meaning that I can now once more edit contacts. But I believe Kontact has a tendency to behave erratically, though it is a fine set of tools when it works. I have written about this elsewhere on this site, cf.
