How to get Audio to work in Hardy 64 bit KDE 3.5

I use Kubuntu Hardy 64 bit Kde 3.5.
In gutsy I never had an issue with audio.
Now all I have are issues. Everywhere I read that it is some issue with Pulse audio.
I think my system uses alsa and not pulse audio.
I can only have one application use sound (which was never an issue with alsa in gutsy) then I have to force alsa to reload.
Skype now has sound only in one ear phone- again never an issue in gutsy with alsa.
Amarok is scratchy, but that might just be missing xmms.
No way can 2 flash audio streams run at the same time.
    Rythmbox just flatout crashes.

How can I set things up to run better in terms of my audio? Please some instructions would be great.
I saw the perfect set up page but honestly there is so much stuff there that anytime I try it things get more messed up.
Is it enough to just apt-get install pulseaudio.
