Boot-up and shutdown messages make me NeRvOuS....

    Hello All:

For the last while I notice some messages that make me somewhat nervous that my computer might be getting sick. The problem is, I am not really sure what they mean. I was hoping to post both my boot up screen messages and the shutdown messages, but am not sure where to find them stored on my computer.

Does anyone know where they are logged so I can post them?

    Cheers,

    t.

Start by looking through the dmesg log file. Open a console and type:
    Code:
    more /var/log/dmesg
Windows no longer obstructs my view.

Sorry for the late reply, but I've found some more regarding my problems with the boot/shutdown screens.

      SHUTDOWN:
I get all kinds of errors telling me that Network Manager can't shutdown. Another post has a screen capture (actually looks like a digital camera shot, but you get the idea) here:

A solution that seems to be somewhat more elegant than issuing a killall is posted here:

However, it's about a year old and I would've thought that didn't need to be done. Anyone have serious objections to changing the order of the softlinks as described in the above post? I am usually hesitant to mess around with boot and shutdown order, but this does seem rather straight forward.

      SYSTEM CLOCK:
For some reason at start up, my system clock says it cannot set itself according to any known methods. See this post here:

      http://www.nabble.com/System-clock-p...d21299619.html

I notice at the end that it appears to be fixed in 2.6.26-13, but my version is 2.6.24-23-386...

      Any ideas on this one?

      Cheers,

I'd make a Live CD of the current release (8.10) and boot it, and see if it appears to work correctly, including shutdown. If it does, then probably the newer kernel is the way to go (I'd just install the newer system).

Hmmm...the only thing that makes me more nervous than the messages is the attempt to upgrade. Not once since Hardy have I successfully upgraded smoothly to a new release. I have always had to do a complete reinstall.

I'll do some more searching online and see if there is anything else on the horizon or a foolproof guide to upgrading to 8.10 without breaking anything....

          Cheers,

Just for kicks and giggles, how old is your machine and what is the age of the BIOS?

Some of those error messages may, like on my machine, be related to a feature in the boot process that checks the age of the BIOS and determines whether to load ACPI or not. You can check BIOS age with the
            Code:
            lshw
command. I, too, was getting strange error messages.

My fix was to modify /etc/modules and to fix the /etc/init.d/halt script that was issuing the halt command with a "-i" argument after the kernel had already shut down IDE. No more error messages and as an added bonus, my machine actually shuts down now.
