Why do some programs hang?

I have a few programs that, when clicked, the program appears in the taskbar for a few seconds like it's loading and then disappears. This happens with at least three. I've uninstalled the programs and reinstalled but they still do this.
These were packages straight out of the repositories that I've run before on another machine.
Any suggestions? thanks

It would be helpful if you tell what programs you are experiencing this 'problem' with.

Let's see if they are actually running. Start any one of the three. Then open a console and type top and see if the program is listed. If it is, it is running, but most likely doing so 'in the background.'

No, none of them show up in the run list.
not even temporarily while the icon is spinning.

Try running those programs from konsole, that way you should get program errors reported on the konsole window.

The error messages should help diagnose the problem...you can post the output here if you can't decipher them yourself.
