    [solved] apt-get broken

    Happy New Year all!

A few weeks ago I attempted to install tor following the instructions here. Somehow, this resulted in a non-functioning tor on my computer. When activated, it would block all internet access. Obviously, there was a problem with my proxy settings somewhere. Rather than attempting to fix it, I decided to enjoy the holidays.

    Fast forward to yesterday:
When running apt-get from a terminal, I get the following output:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get update

W: You may want to run apt-get update to correct these problems
I've been able to figure out that 8118 is the port that privoxy uses. In an attempt to fix this problem of mine, I've run
    Code:
    sudo apt-get remove tor
    and
    Code:
    sudo apt-get remove privoxy
in a terminal. The same error when running sudo apt-get update persists. I've even deleted /etc/privoxy from my root folder in case the settings in the config file where still somehow causing the problem. No luck. Even after a reboot (which I didn't honestly expect would change anything), I'm still stuck in the same place.

I've been unable to find anything on how to go about solving this issue and am at a complete loss as to what I should do next. Save for a fresh install, what can I do?

    Re: apt-get broken

The short answer is something has messed-up your network settings, the network address 127.0.0.1 is a loop-back (not a real address); unless someone has a better suggestion, try this:

      Re: apt-get broken

      Thanks Windy!

After posting this, I managed to solve the problem with a bit more non-frustrated-too-late-at-night digging. I deleted /etc/tor and found a blog post detailing how to get around proxy issues by modifying /etc/bash.bashrc

In that file, I found a set of lines relating to tor proxy settings involving 127.0.0.1 and port 8118. Removing those entries and saving the file freed up apt-get to function as directed.
