    Media Freezes Computer

I got a new Laptop and installed Ubuntu on it, I plan to install kubuntu-desktop to get KDE on it as well, but I am still having problems with it, so I might have to reinstall so there might not be a point.

When ever I play media on my computer it freezes. Totem player is freezes my computer for audio and video. Whether I open audio or video it does it, VLC did it for video, but not audio. Rhythmbox doesn't do it.

What happens it the audio keeps playing but the video is just black, I can move my cursor but not click.

I think this happened when I played the "experience ubuntu.ogg" video file as a test too, that was before I installed the extra plugins.

Player - Audio Freezes - Video Freezes
    VLC - No - Yes
    Totem - Yes - Yes
    Rhythmxbox - No - N/A

UPDATE: It does this for my webcam too. Could it be something with my video card? (I will find out what it is when I boot back into Windows)
UPDATE2: Okay it's "Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family"

    Re: Media Freezes Computer

Have you looked through the system log files (/var/log/) to see if any hardware or driver errors are reported?

I have not. I did not know about that folder.

Which file would be the one for this issue?

        Re: Media Freezes Computer

Good ones to start with are dmesg and messages, have a look through and see if any errors or unknown devices are reported; also have a look at udev to see if anything was reported when you plugged in the Web Cam.

          Re: Media Freezes Computer

The webcam is built into the Laptop.

I wouldn't know what to look for in the logs.

I'll post the output of dmesg tomorrow...

A laptop with built-in webcam...I'm getting a bad feeling about this, if it's one of these new(ish) ultra-mobile things there could be problems; what's the make and model?

              Re: Media Freezes Computer

              It's an HP G50.

I beleive the full model number is HP G50-116CA (And it might be a Pavillion Notebook)

here is what the terminal said at dmesg, but I think it's truncated (because the terminal cut it off at the top)

                Re: Media Freezes Computer

The dmesg log looks good, no errors or unrecognised hardware...
I did a google on HP Pavilon and Linux, found several web sites, all reported that it should work OK, but none listed the G50.

I'm not sure where to go from here... I'll have a think about it and post back... This is anoying, with that processor and chip-set it should work!
