I did

sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

Then I booted in recovery mode and ran the dpkg repar

Now I have a KDE desktop. KDE4 does not seem to exist so perhaps I can install that now that I have a desktop.

I am not going to change the topic to solved until I am sure I have that running.
