Kmail in kde4.1.2 doesn't load settings or mail from kde 3.5.10

I am running HH with both kde 3.5.10 and kde4.1.2. When I open kontact in 4.1 I have to configure kmail from scratch. I would like to import everything from 3.5.x but it does not seem possible. I would rather kmail in 4.1 read the same kmail dir that kde 3.5 uses. I was able at one time to use kmail 3.5 in kde4.1 but that option seems to have disappeared. When I am using kde 3.5.10 I can open all the apps from kde4.1.2 but when using 4.1.2 all the 3.5.10 apps are unavailable.

I had a very similar issue . Also coming from hardy, also running kde 4.1.2 in Hardy. Notably, this did not happen to my wife's account on the same machine.

In the end, I was able to find an old version of ~/.kde/share/config/kmailrc (I backup automatically every night) , so I stopped kmail, copied this file to the current installation, and that restored most of it. I had to manually set up the incoming (pop) accounts (outgoing were correctly picked up, the same for the emails).

I think this is the most important thing, to recover your emails,. Do you know where they are?

In my case the place is ~/.Mail. I looked in the GUI and couldn't find where to configure that, go figure! But I have a line in kmailrc:

folders=$HOME/.Mail

I just copied .kde/share/apps/kmail/mail to .kde4/share/apps/kmail/mail. Also had to configure the pop and smtp accounts.
