    All upgrades/installs fail [SOLVED]

Everything I attempt to install fails. Most recently attempted vim-full. Here is the output:

    Re: All upgrades/installs fail

    hi sheepdog,

I think the magic error notice is at line 25 of your output:

8 not fully installed or removed.

This might indicate that the system crashed or was interrupted during a previous update/install. These basic problems concerning the kernel, images, modules, etc will need to be repaired before you can install/update anything. I notice you are working as root... Maybe you can try to fix the errors with:

    Code:
    apt-get install -f

        This:

        Running postinst hook script /sbin/update-grub.
Searching for GRUB installation directory ...
No GRUB directory found. To create a template run 'mkdir /boot/grub' first. To install grub, install it manually or try the 'grub-install' command. ### Warning, grub-install is used to change your MBR. ###
would appear to be a problem. It's trying to edit the /boot/grub/menu.lst file to reflect the updated kernel, but it can't find one.

I see you have "become root" to do this installation -- although it should not cause a problem for this particular operation, it's not a recommended practice in *buntu. We "sudo" stuff. I wonder if other operations were done as root, that maybe should not have been? -- :P

        From the command line, try
        Code:
        sudo dpkg --configure -a
That should fix problems in the package manager.

What's intriguing, is that he is successfully booting into the system. So, Grub in all its glory does exist and is recognized, else he wouldn't be booting.

            There are multiple mysteries:
            Code:
User postinst hook script [/sbin/update-grub] exited with value 1
            dpkg: error processing linux-image-2.6.24-19-generic (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
The kernel is not being upgraded correctly.

OK, you have a sense of humor, so I'll help!

Something is borked there -- the kernel won't upgrade. Did anything happen that would make you suspect a serious problem? Like when did it stop doing upgrades correctly?

                  Re: All upgrades/installs fail

The upgrades failed the first time it attempted to upgrade the kernel. This is a new install on my laptop. I have had Mint Linux, openSuse and Gentoo installed on this machine, in that order. Landed on Ubuntu because I needed a package that was only in Gentoo and Ubuntu and Gentoo gave me problems.

                  Here's what's in /boot:
                  Code:
                  abi-2.6.24-19-generic initrd.img-2.6.24-21-generic
                  abi-2.6.24-21-generic initrd.img-2.6.24-21-generic.bak
                  config-2.6.24-19-generic System.map-2.6.24-19-generic
                  config-2.6.24-21-generic System.map-2.6.24-21-generic
                  initrd.img-2.6.24-19-generic vmlinuz-2.6.24-19-generic
                  initrd.img-2.6.24-19-generic.bak vmlinuz-2.6.24-21-generic
                  mel@sheepdog:~$
Interesting that there is no grub/ subdir, isn't it? I have no idea how this machine boots. But it does.

                    OK, I have 2 suggestions.

                    1. Since you revealed that it is a new installation, that tells me you haven't accumulated any serious amount of new data. So, I would suggest you install the current release, 8.10. I personally had so much trouble with 8.04 that I couldn't believe it was a "LTS" version -- I was never happier than the day I installed 8.10 on that partition and saw the last of 8.04.

                    2. You need to decide/figure out which OS will control booting. If you accept my recommendation #1, then what you need to do, at the end of the installation process, is tell it to install Grub to the MBR of the hard drive that is first in your BIOS boot sequence. It will pick up the other OS's an set up a boot menu that will let you boot them too.

Worst case, you'll get a Grub Error #15 and have to adjust the hd#, like me, and then everything will work and you'll have the latest version of Kubuntu.

                      Re: All upgrades/installs fail

Let's first find where grub is hiding. Open a console and type:
                      sudo grub
                      and press Enter.
That gives you a GRUB prompt: grub>.
                      Type
                      grub> find /boot/grub/stage1
                      and press Enter.
That gives you a specific (hdx,y).
Note where it says stage1 is found.
                      grub> quit
                      $exit

Let us know what you discover.

Oh, man! I forgot. I set /boot to noauto in fstab so I didn't accidentally screw it up. Sorry about the confusion. But I still cannot install after mounting /boot. Here is the output:

I think you outsmarted yourself with the separate /boot partition. It's unnecessary, and probably the source of some of these problems.

First thing to do is to check how full it is.

                          Code:
                          df -h
                          should do the trick.
