Edit the file (as root) and change the Defaultdepth color from 24 to 16. Save and close, then shutdown and restart your PC. Then try playing a DVD in Kaffiene and see if you get the video. This was (part) of the solution I had to make back on my older VIAO laptop when I was running 7.04. Got sound to work, but only had a blue screen. Changing the colordepth from 24 to 16 fixed that problem.

Hmm, no luck there. It actually crashed X, forcing me to boot into a root console and edit it back to 24.

Well, I solved the problem. Sort of. I installed Kubuntu 8.10 64bit, and all videos are playing fine. Thanks again for all the help though.

Interesting. Did you have the 64-bit version of 8.04 installed prior? If you did, and you followed my HOWTO on commercial DVD playback exactly that might explain the problem you had. That HOWTO was written specifically for 32-bit versions of Kubuntu.

I had the 32 bit version of 8.04 installed. 8.10 will be my first 64 bit system. It is going okay so far. It boots and runs a lot faster, which is nice, and I don't seem to be having too many problems getting programs to work. Flash was a bit of a problem, but it is solved now. It is also my first serious look at KDE4

Well, the important thing is that you have a 'working' system. KDE 4.1.2 still has some quirks, and some functionality is missing (as compared to KDE 3.5.10). But, I think you will find that these are minor issues. When KDE 4.2 is released, we may see most (if not all) these resolved.

Please check this out http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=9582.0 . I had same problem. I tryed each driver to find best possible.
