How do you compile source

Call me a nOOb, 'cause I am.

I've used linux for about two years now, but have only ever done basic things with the standard apps my friend put on when he installed it. I am using K8.04 now, and I need to know how to compile source.

Most of the code I have is in "tar.gz". I download at the library, then bring it home on a flash drive, if that helps.
