VMware 2.5 kernel module updater problem under 8.04

I installed the new VMware player 2.5 with the .bundle installation file on my 8.04 64 bit. When I run vmplayer it runs the kernel module updater (I run 2.6.24-21 on 64 bit) and says it cannot find gcc, which is strange. I manually selected g++ (since it doesn't accept when I select gcc) and then asks for the directory where the kernel headers are located. Previous versions of VMware player which I installed always automatically selected /lib/modules/2.6.24...-generic/ and found what they needed. Not so with this kernel updater! It sets /usr/src/ as the default folder to look for the headers and continues to say that it doesn't find what it needs so matter which directory I specify. I tried the /lib/modules/2.6.24.21-generic one as well as the ones within /usr/src, no success. So vmplayer 2.5 won't run! Yes, I do have linux-headers-generic for my kernel installed. Help is much appreciated!
