    CD/DVD + pendrive + Hard Disk Volume not mounted on Desktop

    Hi evrybody

    I would better to explane and to sum up my old problem already discussed but not yet resolved.
    I cannot see by desktop the devices Pendrive, CD and HD Volume. I checked everything (HAL & related) and they seem OK.
    When I use Konqueror/Dolphin to access my data , the errore message I took is <feature available only with HAL>. Other message maybe related from X.Org Log is < information [config/hal] couldn't initialise context: (null) ((null))>.
    The manual Mount works for PenDrive and CD.
    The fstab and environment are:
    Code:
    xgrass@Kid:~$ cat /etc/fstab
    # /etc/fstab: static file system information.
    #
    # <file system> <mount point>  <type> <options>    <dump> <pass>
    proc      /proc      proc  defaults    0    0
    # /dev/sda4
    UUID=e39be3ca-c398-42c1-9507-15af0eb21a85 /        ext3  defaults,errors=remount-ro 0    1
    # /dev/sda1
    UUID=3A5821255820E17D /media/sda1   ntfs  defaults,umask=007,gid=46 0    1
    # /dev/sda2
    UUID=667C231E7C22E88F /media/sda2   ntfs  defaults,umask=007,gid=46 0    1
    # /dev/sda3
    UUID=fca8eb0c-1d32-459e-b787-e7a28faf4404 none      swap  sw       0    0
    /dev/scd0    /media/cdrom0  udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec 0    0
    xgrass@Kid:~$
    Code:
    Kubuntu 8.04
    Linux 2.6.24-21 generic
    KDE version 3.5.10
    After many attempts I discovered that fron KDM if Restart XServer and I made normal login the problem disappear, very strange no ? This can be a momentary work around but I need to find the resolution .

    Could anyone please help me ??
    Thanks in advance.

    I have same bug but not much of an issue with me. Do you have ntfs-3g for FUSE installed as I found out that FUSE does not use the same mount/unmount procedures as HAL. I also found out that there is a hidden file that, if it has HAL data in it for ntfs drives, it can cause trouble also. I wonder if FUSE has done something to the ability of the desktop to show mounted and unmounted drives?

      I have installed the following (seen by Adept):
      • fuse-utilis
        libfuse2
        libntfs-3g12
        libnts-3g23
        ntfs-3g

      It seems to me Fuse doesn't do anything or I don't know how FUSE works.

        Re: CD/DVD + pendrive + Hard Disk Volume not mounted on Desktop

        Thanx I found your post !!!

        I have the same problems with usb sticks and CD/DVD drives. I did the relogin and worked perfect. Going to try login (with paswd) from the begining to see if this makes any diference.

        [EDIT] Well try loginig from the begging with passwd (not automatic login). Afterwords plug in your pendrive or insert any optical device and check whether it is autodetected. It worked for me.

        I don't think that this is a hal problem since the hal daemon is started since boot time so if you log out and relogin no change is made to the hal daemon. I imagine this to be something different, but I wonder why automatic login creates troubles.

        If I can help I am here.

          Thank you but I always do login with passwd and I have the same problem everytime.
          My workaround is: at login panel do restart Xserver and login with passwd so it works.
          Thanks.
