USB pendrive doesn't appear on Desktop

    Hi folks,

for many days I have a bad problem on Linux regarding USB Pendrive. When I insert the pendrive in USB port KDE ignore the event, that is the icon on Desktop doesn't appear so I cannot access the data.
In addition I noticed on the "Storage Media" panel the Hard Disk Volume are all "unmounted", so they are not available for inquiring.
That strange behaviour some time disappear until the next restart of Linux

I made a lot of attempts but nothing is changed about that .

    My environment is:
    • Kubuntu 8.04
      Linux 2.6.24-19 generic
      KDE version 3.5.10

    The 'fstab' file content is:

    /etc/fstab: static file system information.
    #
    # <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
    proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
    # /dev/sda4

    # /dev/sda1
    UUID=3A5821255820E17D /media/sda1 ntfs defaults,umask=007,gid=46 0 $

    UUID=667C231E7C22E88F /media/sda2 ntfs defaults,umask=007,gid=46 0 $
    # /dev/sda3

    /dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec 0 0

Please could you help me how to resolve this inconvenience it is very urgent .

    thanks in advance.
    Sandro

So it is there but I take it the output of dibl's blkid command does not change...

Have you looked at your /media/ directory after inserting a stick?

Re: USB pendrive doesn't appear on Desktop

The blkid output (UUID numbers) matches the partitions in /etc/fstab.

However, upon looking again at the fstab listing, do those lines really end with a "$"? If so, that's a problem -- I have not seen such syntax in a correct fstab. I don't happen to have any NTFS formatted partitions, but here's what the lines in fstab are supposed to look like (note the ending numbers):

Re: USB pendrive doesn't appear on Desktop

Okay, those are your ntfs partitions.

I can think of a couple of things I'd try. First there is manual mounting. For that you have to create a mount point (like sudo mkdir /media/usb-stick) and then attempt a manual mount (mount -t vfat /dev/sdb1 /media/usb-stick). Any luck?

If that fails, I'd boot a live CD of some sort and insert the stick. That way you'll find out whether it is the stick or the system

the manual mount works and I can see the data (files, dir,...) on the terminal but no on KDE.
the live CD doesn't work too !! so I think is the system .

In addition when I go on "storage media" and click on a resource Hard Disk Volume I take the following message: <feature available only with HAL>, the same message is on Konquereror when I go on Hard Disk Volume. This strange problem also affect a second pc/Linux with the same KDE/Linux version.

No real help but I have found usb recognition quite flaky on kubuntu. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I usually find rebooting makes it work again.

The output doesn't differs. I looked the above http://ubun.... and I found there a work-around to go ahead, but this cannot be the solution. I Think the problem is related to HAL and the boot phase. Thanks anyway for the suggestion.
                              In addition from <KSystemlog: X.org Log> I found:
information [config/hal] couldn't initialise context: (null) ((null))

does this message help to understand the problem ??
