    k3b and programs crashing

Does anyone have a program in Kubuntu that crashes repetitively? K3b for me crashes over and over. There are freezes with other programs but I'm not used to k3b crashing so much. I don't recall that happening in Mepis or Debian.

Is Kubuntu's Intrepid Ibex going to be like this?

I might have to bypass the newest Kubuntu if it does. I'm wondering if Ubuntu would be more smooth. Afterall, the developers don't give a crap about Kubuntu and focus most of their attention on Ubuntu.

The difference in how busy it is around here is also apparent. 'Probably won't have very much feedback.

    Hey kbunt!

To my knowledge, one of the Kubuntu devs checks in at this forum occasionally, but for the most part, our rants are viewed only by other users.

Anyway, K3b has had its ups and downs, in my experience (2+ years). Of late, it's been pretty solid. I just made a couple of Live CDs over the weekend, on my 8.10 (updated) system, and K3b performed flawlessly.

To be honest, I had more problems with 8.04 than I've had with 8.10, odd as that seems, since 8.04 is a "LTS" version. Matter of fact, after I fell victim to temptation and installed KDE 4.0 on my 8.04 system, the whole thing became rather shaky and unpredictable, and in short order I threw in the towel and installed an Alpha version of 8.10. Except for being hit with the e1000e module blacklist (with no backup kernel), I've had a more stable system with 8.10 than I had with 8.04.

So, you might just want to make yourself (if you can find a burning package that works) an 8.10 Live CD, and boot it and see what you think. Get the daily build, not the Beta, from here:

      Hiya dibl!

I know, I'm ranting (again?) but I just don't think it's an isolated case regarding Kaffeine. Actually, that's what I meant, Kaffeine not K3b. Sorry. However, I've had Firefox 3 crash and shut down at various times, too. I just don't know what's wrong with my Kubuntu system. I don't know what else to do but accuse Kubuntu of bugs, sorry. :-/

I think I'll wait until the Kubuntu 8.10 release which is at the end of October?

However, are you saying the daily build is basically what the release will be?

Btw, I am comparing the operation of Kaffeine to someone I know who uses Mepis and Debian. The problem of it crashing isn't present.

I've been using sidux, too, here and there but there were other issues which convinced me to go back to Kubuntu. If it wasn't for the sudo 'status' and the crashing, I'd be really high on Kubuntu! Since, I've had issues with both, I've experimented with Fedora and Mepis but I mostly was using Kubuntu because I was feeling lazy lately and liked the 'Windows-ie-like' atmosphere for a while.

I'm not a Kaffeine afficionado, sorry -- can't comment on how well or badly it runs, because I don't run it.

Firefox has been very stable of late, on my Intrepid system (knocking on wood!). The media plugins are working really well too -- the only site that doesn't play is BBC radio, which I only use to test the media plugins.

Audio has been a little shaky lately -- not sure what that's all about. But I think klerfayt has a handle on it here:

Yeah, if your Kubuntu installation isn't solid, I'd advise you to at least make an 8.10 Live CD, from the daily build, and try booting it. Then if you like what you see ... go for it!
