    Re: Trying to start ProjectCenter

OK I will try that too.

However here is an added twist which compounds my despair!

I found the gnustep-startup-0.20.0 which I followed the instructions to run as it is supposed to check every thing is installed.

So imagine my surprise at what I got back....

    How odd he says!

Adept Manager tells me that I currently have gcc 4.2 and gcc 4.2 base installed

Oh, sorry, looks like you didn't need the build-essential, never mind.

BTW, you sure you call projectcenter up with the command projectcenter? Sounds like a silly question, but what about just entering "project" and then press tab - anything happen?

not silly at all! Hell I have even tried standing on one leg!

I tried "project" tab and project tab and all I get is a beep from the console?

a beep means there is either none or more than one possibility. hit that tab again, man...

anyway, this is getting so silly, I'm install it now! See you later

There it is, how about projectcontrol or projectsynchro

                  Re: Trying to start ProjectCenter

How bizarre, I installed, ran projectControl, got a qt3 error message (but it ran!) and then purged it.

All I can do is suggest you read up on apt - an amazingly powerful tool. It might help you to search for and eliminate all other traces of previous (borked) installs.

Other than that we are collectively banging our heads against a pretty solid wall, sorry!

Hey, no need for apologies! You were kind to try to help and it is appreciated.

I think as this is a new install I will simply wipe and reinstall Kubuntu and then follow the console sudo apt-get install projectcenter.app

This will be the fastest way to ensure I have removed all drosh from previous attempts.

I'll let you know how I get on

                      Re: Trying to start ProjectCenter

I'd be very surprised if it worked - even after a reinstall. Seems like this projectcenter has not been kept up to date, at least in terms of qt... Having said that, if you installed qt3 after your reinstall it might work...

As for development interfaces: what do you need it for? I am no guru by any means, but am just beginning to learn eric

                        Re: Trying to start ProjectCenter

Well I am a Windoze man using VS.NET 2008 daily but tinker occasionally in Linux and have found Kubuntu by far the easiest to install and get along with.

I may need to learn Objective C programming ASAP depending on how my interview goes shortly!!!

Therefore from what I have read I need GNUStep, Gworkspace, GORM and ProjectCenter. The latter being the IDE which I would use as I currently use the VB.NET IDE

So it is a tad frustrating that where I should be putting my energy into learning Objective C I am instead fighting an IDE

                          Re: Trying to start ProjectCenter

Partition your disk so you have your primary root for your productive system. Personally I have a couple 10GB partitions spare for other installs. I am sure that projectcenter.app would function in debian etch, for example, which you could install on just such a partition.

Might be worth getting some info from others... If I can spare the time I will tinker with it 'til I get it to run and let you know...

Alternative would of course be virtualbox. Get your production system in order, install virtualbox and then install another virtual system (like etch) where you know it is going to work.

All depends on how fast your machine is

                            lol

I have the first 80GB for Windows and then 20GB for Linux.

I might have a go at installing SUSE which I tried many moons ago but hear it is better these days!

I got this back from the GNUStep forum btw

                            -----
To start it from the console, type ProjectCenter (case matters).
Basically, you can find the executable for any GNUstep package by running

                            dpkg -L foo.app | grep usr/bin/

or usr/games/ if it is a game
                            ------

so will try these first before anything else

I just installed it on my laptop and got the same non-existent message as you. Following a locate I found that there is no executable. It appears that the last version was for dapper!!! It'll run under debian etch, but I have severe doubts for (k)ubuntu 8.10

You may want to log into the actual ubuntu forum - programming section - and ask for modern equivalents...
