Monitor refresh rate on boot up.

I have nVIDIA drivers for my graphics card. I open settings by typing "kdesu nvidia-settings". I save configuration in xorg.conf, but everytime I start my computer I have to set manualy refresh rate.

    Could you help me please?

Examine your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. Before you make any changes though, please make a backup!!!

      It's too late :/

      Option "metamodes" "1024x768_75 +0+0; 1024x768_70 +0+0; 1024x768_60 +0+0; 1024x768_85 +0+0"
      What I need to do?

Hm, I've got an nvidia card as well but have never seen "metamodes"!? Google metamodes or wait until someone who has heard of it and can give further advice.

If you've shot your X then "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xorg" will help you on your way to recovery. But for heaven's sake, next time make a backup first (or were you having me on?).

Here is my xorg.conf for reference:

I'm not sure which driver, or which card you're running there. So, just some thoughts:

          1. Try running
          Code:
          sudo nvidia-xconfig
and let it write a new xorg.conf (after you back up the one you have). Then run
          Code:
          kdesu nvidia-settings
and set your resolution but leave refresh set on "Auto", and save to X configuration file.

Then try a reboot, or just restart X with Ctrl-Alt-Backspace, and see if it works better.

          2. If it is a 6000-series or later, maybe try the new 177.80 driver:

I can't set auto, because I have old CRT 17'' monitor and I need 75Hz, otherwise it's making a sweeping sound.

Here is what is going on:
I set refresh rate to auto, save to .conf file. Reboot and again I have 55 Hz. 55 Hz shows in system settings>monitor as maximum refresh rate :/

Since I installed nVIDIA drivers my systme settings has maximum refresh rate 55 Hz on 1024 * 768

Re: Monitor refresh rate on boot up.

                          Code:
                            ModelName "Samsung SyncMaster"
                            HorizSync 30.0 - 71.0

There's your problem -- according to DPMS, that monitor won't support a 75Hz refresh rate. If you're sure that it will, edit that "71.0" and make it "75.0" or even "85.0" if that's the spec (but you might blow it up if you're wrong).

Since I installed nVIDIA drivers my systme settings has maximum refresh rate 55 Hz on 1024 * 768
After you install the Nvidia driver, you don't want to ever touch KMenu>System Settings>Monitor&Display (or whatever they call it now) again. Only use the nvidia-settings utility to deal with the video settings.

Here's the xorg.conf that works for my 9600GT and SyncMaster monitor, with a 1600x1200 screen:

A quick look at Nvidia's site indicates that the new 177.80 driver supports the 5000 series, so that's the one you should be using.

I suspect that forcing the refresh rate is responsible for the problems you're having. Unfortunately I guess I'm pointing the finger at your CRT -- as you can see both nilsA and I are letting the driver choose the refresh rate dynamically, which is a happier mode for it.

I can't use the new driver.

I don't get it... I have 'SyncMaster 793DF' I should have maximum refresh rate @ 85 Hz. I used it on windows. :/

Is that error message coming from the packaged nvidia-glx-177 driver, or the downloaded installer from Nvidia? I checked here:

                              http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

And it's very clear that the 5000 series are supported by 177.80. I dunno why your system doesn't see it correctly.

                              Does lspci show it correctly?
