firefox stopped working after last update

After last update, I can no longer launch firefox.
I looked for a lock file in case there was an old instance running but I dont see one.

If I try to launch it from the command line I get
Could not find compatible GRE between version 1.9.0.1 and 1.9.0.*.

    Any help?

Which firefox are you running? Did you update to 3.0.3? If you did, try uninstalling then reinstalling. Also, how did you upgrade? By command line or from firefox's website (unless you're talking about a system update and not firefox).

Re: firefox stopped working after last update

I have only updated through the repositories.

The last update was through the Adept Update manager on Monday I believe. I didn't look at what it updated, so I don't know if it did something to firefox, or if it changed something firefox needed.

AFAIK I have the latest firefox, but I don't know how to check since I cant start it.

I updated directly from Firefox's website. If you have konquerer, use it to go to Firefox's website and download 3.0.3 (I don't believe that the version in Adept is the current one.). Extract the files (anywhere should work), go to the extracted folder, and click on the shell script named "firefox". This is how I updated my version. See if that works.

As the Firefox update 3.0.3 worked for me (through the repositories), perhaps the problem is something else.
Have you installed other browsers like Seamonkey?

Re: firefox stopped working after last update

Since firefox stopped, I'm using an older version of Swiftweasel (2.0.0.8)

I don't think it was a firefox upgrade that broke it, I think the last system update installed/changed something that firefox depends on. I don't know though

Is there a log file that tells what adept has installed?

anyway, i'll try uninstalling/reinstalling it and see what happens

Re: firefox stopped working after last update

In case the problem is actually just in the local user settings, at your home prompt try
              Code:
              mv .mozilla .mozilla_bak
              and then restart Firefox.

If that doesn't help, you can rename it back and have all your settings restored.

                Code:
                sudo xulrunner-1.9 --register-global
                Worked for me.
