    Pulseaudio problems

    Does Pulseaudio work in Kubuntu?

I thought I had part of it installed and then installed what I thought I needed.

But, I cannot get sound to work when I try to use it. As a test, I tried to use the Pulseaudio driver in MPlayer but when I try, there is no sound and I get an error when I start an avi file.

    Code:
    Error
Could not open/initialize audio device → no sound.
    [OK] (button)

Is there any way to fix this and/or to use Pulseaudio in Kubuntu 8.04 Hardy?

It's in the repositories and available to install via Adept Manager. Since installing, have you restarted your system?

Yes, I rebooted. It's installed. It doesn't work. I thought it was pre-installed by default but that's not the case. It also doesn't work when installed. I googled and searched the forums. There's virtually no how-to's for Pulse Audio even in Ubuntu but definitely not Kubuntu. I'm surprised. I don't know if it's any better in the newer Intrepid but it's not very encouraging.

I think there are steps to install but it's not straightforward and many sites claim that it's an easy install in Ubuntu and that it works without much trouble which is obviously false.

Possibly First Steps - PulseAudio may be of help.

For whatever reason, at the moment, I cannot load the site.

I have found some 'work arounds' but it seems like an elaborate chore considering it's supposed to be pre-installed and at least work, if you install the Pulse Audio-related packages.

It's already installed in Fedora 9 and as far as I know, it works. I don't even mind doing several commands and/or steps to make it work but where's the 'how to' and please, please K/Ubuntu, don't claim 'you're ready to go' with Pulse Audio if it doesn't work without some steps. I have discovered there's a lot of posts in various places with this topic of Pulse Audio causing problems or people having trouble getting it to work. That's why I'm claiming there is an issue generally speaking and that it's not just me (although, I admit, many times it's mostly me).

I also was hoping to confirm whether what I have installed is sufficient and whether it's some tweaking that is needed or that I need to follow a number of commands and steps to get it to work.
