Can you boot a Live CD and see whether the optical drive works correctly? Maybe try a different distro or version of Kubuntu than the one you have installed.

Yeah, i booted into pclinuxos and ran it off the ramdisk, and burned a couple discs using that drive easily with k3b. no problems. tried a couple other things, too, like installing the kde4 remix and seeing if that changed anything, running kde4 while i tried burning. still getting that weird permission error.

Re: k3b no longer burning cds

After determining that it's a kernel issue from a bug report on the net, I tried booting into one of my older kernels from grub. It's working fine now.

If anybody else runs into this issue, try a different kernel.

Re: k3b no longer burning cds [resolved]

          Hi:

I'm getting the same error messages. Could you let us know which kernel worked for you? And/or point us to the bug report? Because every bug report I've found points to wodim, not the kernel.
