Ok just installed 8.04 clicked the java sections in "Adept" went to pogo.com and it says I need to have Java installed, so off to java I went and downloaded the latest version for linux (they dont have Kubuntu listed :P) anyway I saved and it went to my documents and said something to the effect that it saved as a binary and maybe corrupt. so went to terminal and typed in su it asked for password, however I typed in password and cursor didn't move(normal?). It said something to the effect of password not authenicated or something like that. I was a long-haired hippie until this happened now I look like peewee herman. Please help me out, I have never used any linux programs till this one and I dont know what the heck I am doing really. Thanx in advance

Re: Java 6u7 problems installing...am total noob
Welcome.
I would go ahead and remove the Java you downloaded from the site.
Open Adept Package Manager and click Fetch Updates, then do a search for Sun-Java
in the list of Java packages that come up you will have to install the Sun-Java6 package and any others you might need (clicking on the package name will give a description of what is in the package). Then click on Upgrade, then install the packages.
This should get java working. You might also want to do a search for the Flash-plugin-nonfree. Re: Java 6u7 problems installing...am total noob
OK what am I doing wrong? Went back to pogo.com and it said my version is incompatible and when went to verify at java.com it said I had version 6 update 6 but needed update 7. Now do I have to update, and if so whats the easiest way because you already know what happens in my opening post. I am at a loss, I don't want to have to go back to the Microsoft way, but I have also 6 months left on my club pogo agreement paid for. btw I am using the Konqueror browser.Products blending Mind, Body, and Spirit<br />www.mistymountaingifts.com

Re: Java 6u7 problems installing...am total noob
with you being new to Kubuntu (Linux?) I would say not to download and install from the website.
the easiest way you will find is to just use Adept Package Manager.
go to this how-to page http://howtoforge.com/the-perfect-de...buntu-8.04-lts
it is a basic set up for Hardy.
since you have Kubuntu installed already, go ahead and start on page 2 of the how-to.
the guy installs quite a bit of stuff, my suggestions would be to install using Adept:
flashplugin-nonfree
kubuntu-restricted-extras
acroread*
non-free-codecs
msttcorefonts
libdvdcss2
sun-java6*
some of my favorite apps are K3B, Firefox, digikam, gimp, and of course Amarok.
but those are just some suggestions.
have fun, the how-to is very easy to follow and has screen shots.
post back to let us know how it goes."Either you repeat the same conventional doctrines everybody is saying, or else you say something true, and it will sound like it's from Neptune." ~Noam Chomsky<br /><br />Gigabyte MB, AMD 64x2 6000, 2 Gigs Patriot DDR2, XFX GeForce 8600GT XXX, 400Gig WD SATA HDD & 1TB WD SATA HDD.
