    No sound [FIXED]

I'm new to Linux. After I installed Kubuntu 8.04 (on a second HDD in a dual-boot w/Win XP Pro) for the first time, and installed support for mp3, wma, and other file formats, I was able to play any of the multimedia files on my Windows HDD, and with excellent sound. However, after I rebooted, I have no sound at all.

    Kernel: 2.6.24-19-generic

Alsa mixer gives the card as Intel IEC958 / RealTEK ALC662 chip (inboard sound on an ASUS p5gc mx/1333 mobo). I know this is supported since I had sound before I rebooted!

    Re: No sound

Are the channels perhaps muted in some way?

Type "alsamixer" in a terminal window. You see some bars with at the bottom OO or MM. If it says MM, it is muted. You can toggle it with the key M.

The ones labeled Headphones and IEC958 I can mute and unmute, but keying the arrow keys to change the bar settings does nothing on them.

I've noticed that /proc/asound is empty - that is, there are folders and files listed, but they all contain no data.

          You could try this:

          Open a terminal and type:
          sudo /etc/init.d/alsa-utils reset
          sudo reboot

Some people complain that this only fixes the sound for one reboot, but for me, I just used it one time, and I've had sound since.

Worked! Thanks.... I entered "sudo /etc/init.d/alsa-utils.d reset" and instantly I got audio (without reboot)
