    VMware installation problem

I have been in discussion with the very helpful Fintan about running Windows in a virtual machine and have run into a major problem with installing VMware.

The full discussion can be found here

    http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...pic=3096347.30

but in essence the problem I am getting is shown thus:

"Using compiler "/usr/bin/gcc". Use environment variable CC to override.

Your kernel was built with "gcc" version "4.2.3", while you are trying to use
"/usr/bin/gcc" version "4.2.4". This configuration is not recommended and
VMware Player may crash if you'll continue. Please try to use exactly same
compiler as one used for building your kernel. Do you want to go with compiler
    "/usr/bin/gcc" version "4.2.4" anyway? [no]

For more information on how to troubleshoot module-related problems, please
visit our Web site at "http://www.vmware.com/download/modules/modules.html" and
    "http://www.vmware.com/support/refere...es_linux.html".

    Execution aborted."

I have searched on the net and found this to be a pretty commonplace problem and whilst many have found a solution the instructions given seem to require modification of the kernel which in my hands, well I'd probably be safer with an ouija board! I have seen a reference to a patch (any-any) which some claim to have worked for them which results in the following error

    "ian@ianlaptop:~$ sudo '/home/ian/Download/vmware-any-any-update115/runme.pl'
Unable to copy the source file ./vmmon.tar to the destination file
    /usr/lib/vmware/modules/source/vmmon.tar.

    Execution aborted."

Has anyone got any ideas how I can fix this please? Frankly based upon my research it seems to apply to all kernel versions in all Linux distros.

    Thanks

    ian

I ran into a similar problem. when it asked me if i wanted to continue any way i said yes (typed "y" and hit enter). it told me essentially that it was fine, and continued. other than that i followed the directions i found here:
