    I don't know much about such things -- which is probably why i'm so good at re-installing.

    I would be inclined to first copy the .kde directory and paste it somewhere handy and re-name it, then maybe try what you suggested.

    Maybe someone who understands it and can help you further will drop in......

    I had assumed that the fault was mine, something i did, but it doesn't look like that if three of us have the same problem.

      My first posts in this topic where done at my work. Now I'm at home, and I noticed that the gtk-qt-engine package was upgradable. I did upgrade it, and the problem popped up here. So, the cause must be in this package. Indeed, according to this comment,
      Code:
      sudo apt-get install gtk-qt-engine=1:0.8-1ubuntu2
      should fix it. At my home computer, it does. It also makes the GTK settings return.
