I just installed Kubuntu 8.04 - no problems. I added ubuntu-desktop - install appeared to go OK.
BUT
Now none of my gnome based programs will run in KDE - Firefox & gthumb for example. The hard drive flashes away then dies. I logged out and logged into gnome - total failure. All I get is a rectangular box on the top-left of the screen. It is probably a terminal that should be populated with some form of an error message but isn't.
I decided to reinstall ubuntu-desktop but all I get is a 52.3kb file that loads. I removed ubuntu-desktop but all I remove is the 52.3kb file. ubuntu-desktop is a meta package for the basic gnome desktop but after installation it ceases to function that way.
Now I am down to trying anything!!! Using synaptic I highlighted all the gnome* files and reinstalled - no improvement.
My question is how do I remove ubuntu-desktop? or how do I reinstall ubuntu-desktop?
Any help would be appreciated.
