    firefox Java problem(solved)

I need Java JRE for an site I frequent. I installed JRE with apt-get etc. and I see that it was installed. It's in /usr/lib/jvm. When trying to use a feature on that site I get a message to install Java. As I said I HAVE Java installed. I see Java and it works in Open Office. How to I redefine the Path for Firefox to find and use Java. I am using windows terminology (find the path) so I hope I explain myself correctly. In other words how do I get this site to see I have Java and use it?
    TIA

    Re: firefox Java problem

If you use NoScript and AdblockPlus, you must enable Java on the sites you wish to allow, it is disabled by default.

Installing it via Adept didn't work for me, try going to the Java site: http://www.java.com/en/download/linu...ww.java.com:80 and download the Linux self-extracting file: install_flash_player_9.tar.gz, or the 64 bit version if you have that, not the .rpm.

Extract it, enter the extracted directory/folder (install_flash_player_9_linux/), open a console/terminal, and drag the flashplayer-installer into the console. Not the libflashplayer.so.

Answer "Yes" to "Do you want to install?"

When it has finished, it will ask you to delete the *something, but i left it where it was as it seems harmless.

    Good Luck.

      Re: firefox Java problem

OK, here's the real problem which has just become evident to me. I have dual boot Kubuntu on me computer. i.e. the option to use KDE 3.5.9 OR 4.1. All my problems with the Java are only in KDE 4.1. I moved over to 3.5.9 and Java works fine on that site. Am I compelled to use 3.5.9 forever? I do like 4.1 but seem to come up too often with problems that don't exist in 3.5.9. I have had problems with getting konsole commands to work and now this. All seem to be "path" related. So meanwhile I guess I'll just stick to the "older" KDE.
By the way "aged hippy" the site you sent me to only allowed a RPM version of Java or a bin version. No tar.gz.

I must admit, i don't use 4.1x much, i feel at 'home' on 3.5.10, but i will pop across there to try Java out....

It's the second link down on that page, "Linux (self-extracting file) filesize: 18.83 MB", i apologise for giving the wrong description.

Thanks "aging hippy". installing adobe flash was the answer.
Maybe I can carry on using 4.1 rather than going to 3.5.10 (i only now saw that there was an update -thought I had 3.5.9).

You are Welcome, i'm glad to help.

I like 4.1, but just prefer 3.5.10. I seem to experience less problems and glitches, but undoubtedly they will all be ironed out soon.

Yes I do have more glitches with 4.1. Hmmmm. Maybe I should use the tried and trusty version (3.5.10).
              Thanks again

Hey Errol, if the problem of the firefox java was fixed, go ahead and edit your first post and add the word Solved to it, and to any other posts, this way we can know if it is resolved.

                  Sorry all
I added solved to the last post as I didn't know it had to be on the first one. Corrected now.
