Wireless stopped working since removing Enlightenment

    Hi,

This is a weird one. On a vanilla install (apart from all updates) of HH this morning, I installed Enlightenment from the repos. I included the themes too. After running it for an hour or two and deciding I didn't want it, I removed the whole thing (selecting to completely remove all config files).

Since that removal completed, my wireless connection has stopped working. Nothing else has changed with either my wifi router or the install of Kubuntu. How these things are connected is beyond me! The router is sat on my desk, less than 12" from the laptop. The wired connection works fine, but even though the wireless light is on and it's supposedly enabled, KNetworkManager is saying "no wireless networks found".Oh, and my mobile phone is happily downloading themes from a wifi connection to the same router as I type this

    Could anyone please help?

    Thanks,
    Jim

I wonder whether selecting "remove all config files" has done precisely that and removed your router settings.

How did you connect up before? Was it with knetwork manager or from system settings? Whichever, take a look in there to see if your settings are still there.

I figured leaving behind config files is probably not a good idea with a window manager, but it seems I should have left them alone. Still, I can't figure out why Enlightenment would need to remove my wifi nic settings/config. Which also makes me wonder what else it may have removed!

The connection was pretty much done automatically. The hardware settings app popped up to inform me that the drivers were needed for my Broadcom card. Then it installed fwcutter, extracted and installed the firmware.

I'll have another look to see if my nic drivers have gone awol.

      Thanks for the suggestions Liquidator

I think your first port of call will probably be the start/system settings/network settings and you ought to be able to see if your wireless card is enabled there. That may give you a big clue.

Incidentally, I'm a firm believer in belt and braces - in addition to having kde installed I always have 1 of the lightweight desktops installed - just in case something makes kde go totally pear-shaped .
        Just a thought

It's supposedly enabled and all the settings are correct, but...it cannot see any network. I've tried KWiFiManager too and that cannot see anything either. The hardware light is lit to say the nic is running.
I still think this is something relating to the drivers, but even removing and reinstalling them hasn't worked.
As this is a fresh install, I'm just going to start again. This one is broken. You live and learn hehe! No more complete removal of anything in future!

And a good thought too. I'm going to do that as the first job after reinstallation.

          Thanks again Ian. Much appreciated.

Well, after more messing, I did give up and reinstalled. Wireless came back up with no problems after extracting the firmware. Very odd.

As for installing one of the lightweight window managers, I haven't played with any of these for a long time and went a bit mad. My wife is sick of hearing me swear at the laptop hehe. So, in addition to KDE, I have the following to play with:
              Blackbox
              Fluxbox
              Fvwm
              IceWM
              Window Maker

Crash now KDE. I dare you! :P
