Just after startup with KDE, the screen is dimmed until various things like Autostart applications launch and systray applications get settled (Knetworkmanager and the like). Once all that initial admin is out of the way, the screen brightens and can be used.
Unfortunately, if I boot directly into my KDE4 installation, the screen never brightens, and I get stuck peering at a murky monitor. I need to back out, start a KDE3 session which goes all the way to the brightening screen, then come back into KDE4, where the screen will now brighten properly.
This happens regardless of whether I use the KDE3 kdm or kdm4.
Can anyone tell me what's going on here, and how to go about fixing it? It's something that's kind of getting in the way of my making the switch. (That and a panel applet or two.)
Possibly relevant info: NVidia graphics card on a HP Pavillion laptop. Same with desktop effects enabled or disabled.
Any pointers appreciated.
Cheers.
