How to add a second Hdd as home!!

    Hello,

As far as I know some version updates needs reinstallation of Kubuntu.
I have about 90 Gb of data at home directory (photos, music videos etc).
It takes too long to back up it and make new install.

Planning to buy a second 160 Gb or 250 Gb hdd.
    Make this hdd home.

Move all files in present home to this directory.

It will be easy to format or upgrade my Kubuntu.

Checked the forums but couldnt find a proper topic.

Can anyone help to find a link or how to make this??

    Thanks for all help.

      Could be better.

I have often wondered why *ubuntu is so unfriendly when it comes to setting up custom mounts at installation... openSUSE definitely had that right a long time ago.

Custom mounts on a fresh install are a piece of cake with *buntu, whether you use Gparted or the included installer. Creating new space for a new /home location and then building and moving /home to that new space at other than a fresh install that is a different story and is best left to a more capable tool such as the *parted variants. It doesn't matter what distro, that scenario is a much more complex, but doable, task.

If you think that *buntu should have a better partitioner, write a request or better yet a bug.

          Hello,

          Thank you for the link.

I added new my new hdd yesterday night.
I used gparted program to create partition.
As gparted works with root priviligies now the new hdd' owner is root.
I want to change the owner of this this hdd.
So i can only create directory also as root.

How can I change the owner of this new hdd.

There are some errors while following the commands on the link.
I will try to solve them again.

            Hello Again,

I tried to move my home to my new disk using the blog

            http://www.ivankuznetsov.com/2008/04...partition.html

But all blogs explains to move home to a second partititon.
I use a new disk for this instead of a partition on same disk.
            I partitioned my new disk
            I mounted newhome as explained.
            Copied all files.
Moved my current home to oldhome.

            added

            /dev/sdb1 /home ext3 nodev,nosuid 0 2

            to my fstab file

I restarted pc. While kde bar goes on it said making a check of sda1 %0 counted up to %100.
            Then login window came.
As i enter password screen returns again back to login window again.
So there happened a loop and I couldnt login to my xwindows system.
From console ctrl+alt+f1 window I moved my oldhome back to home
Also edited fstab removing the line above.
Then restart logged in the system.

I think that I have problem with the line added to fstab file
Here is a copy my original fstab file.

            # /etc/fstab: static file system information.
            #
            # <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
            proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
            # /dev/sda1
            UUID=e0065b2a-fded-4ac9-837d-1b4825a3235f / ext3 relatime,errors=remount-ro 0 1
            # /dev/sda5
            UUID=24820305-a7cc-4aee-9ed9-12a97e6e9bb0 none swap sw 0 0
            /dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0

Can anyone help me to add a line so my new disk will my new home??

            /dev/ /home ext3 nodev,nosuid 0 2 line did not worked as i explained.

            My new disk is sdb1

Thanks for any comment and reply.

Ps: On 21th I am planning to install 8.10 Interpid Ibex Alpha 6. Moving home will make life easier for me.
