Kaffeine no longer borked--read proposed fix below:-

    Hi,
this fix idea came from Douglas's advice on Kubuntu-users.

    kubuntu-users@lists.ubuntu.com

Hardy 8.04 and 8.04.1 and Ibex now call mounted devices /dev/scd0 etc instead of /dev/hdo.
Unfortunately the Kaffeine package has not been updated by the developers to recognise /dev/scd0 causing endless inconvenience out there in Hardy Kubuntu multimedia userland.

Start Kaffeine,----go to settings then go to xine engine parameters then go to media
Then change both /dev/cdrom and /dev/dvd to the setting /dev/scd0 and it will work (click on apply first).
Of course you may need libdvdcss2 from medibuntu.
    This fixes xine as well.

You might look at storage media on system menu and look at the properties of the mounted dvd to discover scd0, scd1 etc for your particular system.

    Cheers

    Same method fixes kscd
Putting /dev/scd0 in the kscd config for /dev/cd lets it play cd's as well

      Kaffeine works OK...for me.
      Right from the 'get-go'.
Ooh! One thing you ought to do,...to beat the "DVD is encrypted' issue......is to use VCD 'button'.

To get that missing lbdvdcss2 'codec'.

Using the VCD 'button'....installed it (for me ).
