    firewall

Is there a firewall for Kubuntu

There doesn't seem to be one installed in my configuration. I have to turn off the router firewall to get ntp to connect to the time servers and I don't like that. The router firewall doesn't allow me to fine tune which portals can be used.

I did a Synaptic search, but most of what I saw quickly looks to be for managing firewall rules and developing firewalls.

    Re: firewall

You can use firestarter or ufw which are both pretty good. They all manage iptables rules.

      Basic iptables howto

Iptables is a firewall, installed by default on all official Ubuntu distributions (Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu). When you install Ubuntu, iptables is there, but it allows all traffic by default. Ubuntu 8.04 Comes with ufw - program for managing a netfilter firewall
guarddog- firewall configuration utility for KDE
Guarddog is a firewall configuration utility for KDE. It is aimed at two
groups of users: novice to intermediate users who are not experts in TCP/IP
networking and security, and those users who don't want the hassle of
dealing with cryptic shell scripts and ipchains/iptables parameters.
firestarter - gtk program for managing and observing your firewall
Firestarter is a complete firewall tool for Linux machines. It
features an easy to use firewall wizard to quickly create a
firewall. Using the program you can then open and close ports
with a few clicks, or stealth your machine giving access only
to a select few. The real-time hit monitor shows attackers
      probing your machine.
ufw - program for managing a netfilter firewall
Ufw is a tool to manage a local host-based firewall. It provides a command line interface and aims to be uncomplicated and easy to use.
gufw (intrepid ?) - graphical user interface for ufw
gufw is an easy and intuitive way to manage your Linux firewall. It supports common tasks such as allowing or blocking pre-configured, common p2p, or individual port(s), and many others!
arno-iptables-firewall. Single- and multi-homed firewall script with DSL/ADSL support
Unlike other lean iptables frontends in Debian, arno-iptables-firewall will setup and load a secure, restrictive firewall by just asking a few question. This includes configuring internal networks for internet access via NAT and potential network services (e.g. http or ssh).
      and many, many others...

        Re: firewall

        Thanks - tried Arno-iptables-firewall

Didn't like it - no feedback that anything is happening.

Uninstalled and installed firestarter. Like the interface much better. Don't know if it is actually doing anything more than arno-iptables-firewall or not.

May also install guarddog and try that. Searched synaptic and ufw was indeed installed, but not doing anything.

One thing I'm not too sure about with firestarter - it doesn't start automatically at boot or when KDE starts. It seems that I have to remember to always start from the menus. Unless, that is, I just leave it running at shutdown and let KDE start it automatically that way.
