device icons not appearing on desktop until I manually mount something

I have a few windows shares that I mount in fstab using cifs. When I first installed kubuntu (two days ago) Icons would appear on the desktop for these shares. If I had a cd in the drive when the computer booted, an icon for the cd would appear. Now , no icons appear when I first boot/login. However if I mount another device, an unmounted drive or a usb/flash drive, after logging in , icons appear for all devices. I want the icons for the mounted partitions and devices to appear when I log in.

I am using kubuntu 8.04. kDE 3.5

Any suggestions?

what ver. of kde are u using? u mention 3.5 but is this 3.5.8/9 ??
