System Freeze: Kubuntu 8.04 AMD 64

Thank you for reading this post

I am running Kubuntu 8.04 AMD64 on an Athlon 4000+ with 4Gb of RAM, two identical SATA 500 Gb HDD, two identical GeForce 8600 GT 256 Mb Graphics Cards on SLI. The Motherboard is an ABIT KN8-SLI.
I have only one problem: Sometimes, randomly as far as I can tell, the system freezes completely. The screen(s) freeze, the system becomes completely unresponsive, Ctrl+Alt+Backspace will not restart X, I cannot invoke the task manager and waiting does nothing (I've experimented waiting up to 6 hours). The only thing I can do is a hard reboot, and then the system reacts as if nothing odd has happened.
I apologize, I know that I am giving next to no information...
I don't know how to diagnose or begin to investigate this problem, any pointers are greatly appreciated.

    Here's the output from sysinfo:

I'll try this the next time it locks up, thanks. Is there a log of X server crashes on my system? Or is there a way to create one?

Log files for xorg.conf are located in /var/log. What you want to look at is the Xorg.0.log file.

The "Alt + SysRq + r s e i u b" combination didn't work. It didn't do anything at all, just like "Ctrl + Alt + Backspace" or trying to invoke the task manager....
Yesterday I did try the SysRq combination with the system running properly and it did work as expected.

Did you discover anything in the log files? If not, I'd be starting to suspect the hardware - memory, maybe.

There isn't anything in the log that (to my unknowing eyes) looks like an error report or warning... I attached the output of /var/log/Xorg.0.log to this post

Doesn't appear to be anything unusual in that log. Another potentially useful log is the "syslog" file in the same directory where you found the Xorg.0.log file.

Hey dibl, thanks for helping me out. Linuxers are a separate breed... or maybe, linuxers are humans are humans are meant to be, uh?

Anyway, here's the syslog attached. Again, my illiterate eyes see close to nothing, but this one seems more interesting, it has entries like

Linux users are probably somewhat a cross-section of their various cultures -- well, the educated part of their cultures, anyway. You find all personality types ...

I'm no system expert, by any means, but these errors look kinda bad. Inodes are "index nodes" on your filesystem -- you don't need any problems with them:

Likewise, the swap space shouldn't even be used during bootup, so it's weird that you're getting those "Bad swap file entry" errors -- I think I'd be getting worried ....

Both inode errors and swap file errors could be coming from a failing hard drive, I think. If I were you, I'd figure out how to test the hard drive. I tested mine a year or so ago -- I'm a little fuzzy on the particulars, but I recall figuring out how to use "smartmontools" to get the SMART statistics off my drives. Google suggests that "bonnie+" and "Ultimate Boot CD" have hard drive testing capabilities as well.

EDIT: I just now reconstructed the process to check hard drive health:

                    1.
                    Code:
                    sudo apt-get install smartmontools
                    2. For my one IDE drive that always runs hot (51 degrees C):

                    Code:
                    dibl@ibex:~$ sudo smartctl -ia /dev/sde1

Note that there is a "short test" and a "long test" available. If you're worried about a hard drive showing early signs of trouble, you should probably run the long test:

                    Code:
                    sudo smartctl -t long /dev/sdxn
(where "x" and "n" are your device values )

What 'caught' my eye in your syslog:

Do you have Firefox installed? What version, and is it the 64-bit? Can you relate your problem to Firefox, i.e., did the problem begin to present itself after Firefox was installed?

                        Hey guys,

dibl: I am running right now the Seagate SeaTools long test on the first drive, in the short tests both drive "Passed". After I'm done with those I will install and run the smartmontools and then I will post the result. I also tested the memory with UBCD, it passed.

Snowhog: If I'm not wrong that was me killing FF because it froze up playing a flash video. But I don't know if I am running FF 64bit... I'll check when I boot up the problem box, I would bet I have the 32 bit version.

Also, I dug around a bit before running the SeaTools test and I opened the .xsession-errors file. Oh dear. It's 84 pages. I'll attach it later with the next update. Anyway, I am beginning to think that I may have a problem with the Motherboard... It's old-ish and I have noticed odd behavior before the OS loads up. The HDDs, memory and graphic cards are all new.
                        Does it follow that I reject all authority? Perish the thought! In the matter of boots, I defer to the authority of the bootmaker. <br /> -Mikhail Bakunin-, &quot;God and the State&quot;

Your issues do have that "hardware" look about them -- sudden hard freezes that don't re-start with Alt-SysRq RSEIUB generally come from the hardware. The old PSU may not be holding up the voltage to the motherboard, for example.

Re: System Freeze: Kubuntu 8.04 AMD 64

Although I tend to agree with dibl and the others, that it may be a hardware issue, I'm curious to know if this lockup occurs when firefox is running. I'm watching some weird lockups occur with certain web pages. Complete system lockup. I'll try that 'unlock method next time it happens just to see if it makes a difference.

                              UPDATE:

Tried the 'skinny Elephant' graceful shutdown this morning when the laptop froze (on dialup and firefox) - - - and it didn't work. Same thing last night. Guess it's time to get Opera on board and see if it's a firefox thing.

                              UPDATE #2

I tried something different. I rebooted (cold start) opened a console and kept repeating dmesg while connecting via dialup modem, started firefox, and went to Opera.com for their download. It of course detected Linux, and Ubuntu 8.04. While it attempted to start download, and just before freeze, I saw new entries in dmesg that appear to be related to the hsf modem and stack errors, but since it froze, I can't do anything with these error messages. I wasn't having any issues once I got the modem to work, but in my attempts to get wireless up and running, I udpated the HAL items via adept.

Everything for me seems to go back to HAL being my major obstacle.
