xfe as default file manager in Hardy?

I'd like to have xfe as my default file manager, because I like having the tree panel. I tried setting it as the default using KDE Control Center: select KDE Components > File Associations, then inode > directory, Add <xfe as new app>, then Move Up and Apply. But then, when I use the System Menu to open anything other than Home Folder, I get an error popup saying the URL (or whatever) is not valid. Switched from xfe back to Konqueror, and all is well.

Has anyone else tried (successfully) to use xfe as the default file manager? Is there a fix for what I get when I try it?

To set the default system wide, run
    kdesu kcontrol

in a terminal to open the system settings in sudo mode.

There is a tree view option in Konqueror under View>View Mode.

That's what I did, and it doesn't play well with the System Menu.

Actually, with xfe on my main panel, it opens in my home directory but the tree view shows everything up to /, so it's easy to open whichever directory I want. The only thing I need the System Menu for is Remote Places and Storage Media.
