Any way to hide backup (file.extn~) files?

Dolphin doesn't seem to have this capability. Is there a file browser out there that can give image thumbnails and also hide backup files? I seem to recall that Nautilus hid backup files along with .hidden files (or am I remembering wrong?) All those backup files tend to clutter things up.

Or, perhaps an alternate solution could be to direct backup files to a single folder. That seems less likely to be possible, though.

Why isn't the alternate solution possible?

That's what I do in my computer, I put all backups in my $HOME/backup, so the *~ files all go there.

How do you do that? (Automatically, I'd hope.)
