Compiz and my NVIDIA video - nasty problems - can I dispense with compiz?

After adding KDE 4.1 as an alternate sesson (and finding it lacking) I returned to using KDE 3.5.9 - but compiz seemed to have taken over windows management THERE too. I installed compiz-icon and was able to change to KWIN and that re-stablized my desktop quite a bit...

but I notice that compiz continues to show up in my list of running processes

xxxx@xxxx:~$ ps ax | grep compiz
    11210 ? S 0:02 ksmserver [kdeinit] --windowmanager /usr/bin/compiz
    11927 ? S 0:01 kwrapper ksmserver --windowmanager /usr/bin/compiz
    11929 ? S 0:00 ksmserver [kdeinit] --windowmanager /usr/bin/compiz
What's up with this? Should I uninstall compiz? Or this this normal for 3.5.9?

Is the video performance on your screen OK? In other words, windows open and close correctly, have their borders, etc.?

Unless those processes are sucking a lot of CPU resources, you might consider the advantages of leaving well enough alone. Compiz may have replaced the KDE kwin, for example, but if you delete Compiz then you will need kwin again ....

However, AFAIK you can't hurt KDE by un-installing compiz, so if you have to,
    Code:
    sudo apt-get remove --purge compiz*
    No guarantees, of course.

As far as I understand it, I'm running KWIN now. Under KWIN everything is fine - windows appear quickly and cleanly, borders and title bars are fine.

Now when I switch to Compiz (via compiz-icon) everything slows down greatly - windows paint in sections, window moves are *very* slow. CPU load goes up and stays up.

I just might uninstall compiz. And if it breaks things I can now blame YOU! <grin>
