After switching from a gnome desktop to KDE 4.1 I seem to be missing some functions. I can no longer find system > administration at the top of the desktop but most seems to be found under KDE's application tab. I used to have a synaptic but it seems the only way to run it now is in a terminal session. I recently installed a program for soft shutdowns by my APC ups but I cannot find the program in applications or by searching using dolphin. I used to be able to right-click a program title and transfer it to my desktop for execution at a later time.

The KMenu provides access to all your system administration and software packages. The default package manager GUI for KDE is Adept Manager, but you can install and use Synaptic if you prefer it. After installation, its icon should appear in the Kmenu>System menu, and you can click on it to run it. I dunno about your UPS app -- you'll have to search the forum and maybe find something about that one.

Re: Missing apps
if you want to use Synaptic instead of Adept, open Konsole and type
sudo apt-get install synaptic
it will then be available under Kmenu >System >Synaptic Package Manager

Re: Missing apps
Actually overall I'm quite happy with KDE 4.1. I've become used to the changes and use adept with no issues. I am still wondering how I can make a desktop icon that will launch a program that is listed in the applications tab. ai installed the UPS Power Chute program using Wine and it seemed to work fine. I am puzzled where I should go to find the windows programs that I had previously installed using Wine and also crossover office.

Re: Missing apps
as far as I know you can go to Kmenu >Applications then find the program you want to add to your desktop, right click on it and the click add to desktop.
as for the other problem... if you added the program to Wine then it is a Windows based program. (as Wine is for Windows apps). I don't use Wine so I am not too familiar, but you should be able to load Wine and install the program from wherever you got it last time."Either you repeat the same conventional doctrines everybody is saying, or else you say something true, and it will sound like it's from Neptune." ~Noam Chomsky

Gigabyte MB, AMD 64x2 6000, 2 Gigs Patriot DDR2, XFX GeForce 8600GT XXX, 400Gig WD SATA HDD & 1TB WD SATA HDD.
