    I can't open zip files

I have a zip file I have downloaded, but when I open I can't see the files inside of it. It just tells me archive not loaded. And the zip files is like 6mb of what nothing?

I have downloaded everything needed to open zip file in ark but still doesn't work what should I do ?

It seems that Ark from /usr/lib/kde4/bin does not find zip libs (or any other than tar). You can load ark from kde3.5 version (if you have both installed) and it will read zip files (and any other archive libs that you have installed). Personally I unistall KDE4 Ark (be carefull to don't unistall KDE4 desktop too) and now KDE3.5 Ark is my default Archive manager.

Could you kindly tell me how to do that step by step?

Pardon for this request but am new to this "Kubuntu" and "Linux" thing. I am using right now Kubuntu 8.04 KDE 4.1 and ARK doesn't work properly with zip

Re: I can't open zip files

if you right-click on the desktop a select run, type ark, it should display two options try each one. You will recognize kde3 version of ark because it looks different and old style.

To uninstall Ark (KDE4 ver) search adept package manager (not add/remove program) from de K menu, open it search for ark. You will see 'ark' and 'ark-kde4'. Right-click and select to 'uninstall' ark-kde4. Now search for kubuntu-kde4 and select 'cancel change', if not it would uninstall the whole kde4 desktop. Now apply!

Re: I can't open zip files

There is a program called unzip.

You can download it if you aren't afraid of using the command line

                use the commando

                man unzip

                to view all possible options.

Re: I can't open zip files

                  From the Ubuntu side (repositories):

xarchiver - GTK frontend for most used compression formats
Xarchiver is a Desktop Environment independent GTK+ 2 frontend for manipulating
7z, arj, bzip2, gzip, rar, tar, zip, and RPM files. It allows you to create
archives and add, extract, and delete files from them. Password protected
archives in the arj, 7z, rar, and zip formats are supported.

Xarchiver uses library package routines, if available. If you need even more
package formats, try xarchive which uses shell scripts.

xarchive - GTK frontend for most used compression tools
xarchive is a generic gtk2.0 front-end for various archiving programs. It uses
wrappers around command line archiving tools to do the actual work. When
xarchive starts it consults the wrappers in it's wrapper directory to see what
types of files are supported. This makes adding support for a new archive
format a simple matter of writting a wrapper for the command line tool and
dropping it in the wrapper directory.

You can use Dolphin to manage your archive files as well. In the General settings of Dolphin you can check the box "Browse through archives." Then, when you click on a zip file (or whatever), it will display all the files in the zip and you can copy them to any other folder just as you normally would in Dolphin.
