Build-essential There has got to be a better way

So here I am with a laptop that can't use dialup due to drivers that don't work, and can't use WIFI because I can't download - - - !!!

So I go after the madwifi since it appears to now work on 64 bit and supports Atheros. Can't install via USB key transfer because I need build-essentials, - - - - and it's not on the CD.

I go looking for it and all it's dependencies, and basically go nuts trying to find the right version, and the right install order.

So my question would be, why cant we download build-essential and all it's dependencies in one download. In this way, we get the right files, and all in one shot. At least make it an option something like "Do you want all it's core dependencies too?"

I know there is a chance we may get a duplicate file, but during the install, doesn't it ask if you want to re-install, at which point we can decide yes or no.

Another option - include build-essential on the release CD

      Well Snowhog - - - no luck

say's "unable to locate package build-essential"

Seems it's not on the 64bit CD either as I have made sure to add it to the active repository list.

      - - tried it with build-essentials too - - no luck

You probably have an ethernet connection which you can connect with to your router.

        So then do
        sudo apt-get build-essential

and you have all your files. Or have I read your post incorrectly?

Strange, as it on the alternate install CD for hardy...and on dapper LiveCD (don't have a more recent LiveCD). Of course the issue could be with only the 64bit CD (perhaps there wasn't enough space).

You can check /pool/main/b/ directory to make sure it's not on the CD.

There is a DVD for those who want more than basic installation:

            > Which *buntu to pick?
What's the difference between the Ubuntu CD and DVD?
The CD usually contains only one version of Ubuntu (Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Edubuntu) and is either the Desktop CD, the Alternate CD, or the Server CD. The DVD contains the entire Main and Restricted repositories (read more about Main and Restricted here), which means it has Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, and Edubuntu, allowing you to install any or all four versions without needing an internet connection.
            Before you edit, BACKUP !

Why there are dead links ?

Sorry mjtolsma, but broadband is a figment of my imagination. None at the house. Closest wireless hot spot is McDonald s - pay by the hour.

So I'm stuck with dialup (Dell HSF Modem drivers are not functioning correctly under 8.04) and attempting to install the latests madwifi driver for the Atheros 5007 wireless instead of attempting the ndiswrapper method

Either way, all these setups pretty much require build-essentials to work. Downloading a full distro is not an option at this point.

                I have a question / thought

Can I create a repository on my own hard drive. I download all the packages I thin I need initially, and let aptitude get it's dependencies from this location??

I have been trying to install the dependencies individually, and it's not working well.

                  It worked - - - I think

                  Build-essential is now supposedly installed
madwifi is also now supposedly installed, but doesn't seem to be working, but I will pull down wicd and verify that way.

We will see. At least the repository on my hard drive works.

                  Edit:

Yes, the repository is fully functional. Brought down a .deb file for Wicd, and put it through the onboard repository - - but the install failed. Seems there is a conflict with the 'network manager' even though Knetwork Manager was shut down.

No matter what I do - - it isn't being easy - - -but I now know how to create and update a repository.

Re: Build-essential There has got to be a better way

I had to do a manual uninstall of Network Manager in 8.04 64 bit. Wasn't an option.

If that's the only kinda problems I encounter - - no big deal
