Full codec support on stable Hardy--how?

Greetings all:

I just installed the latest ISO on my desktop (so it doesn't matter if it works or not at this point). However, while looking for firefox (bunch of firefoxes to choose from) I realized that I wasn't going to use automatix after the last go with it on Dapper. So I did some google work and found lots of "stuff" to get multimedia and dvd working, but how combersome does it really have to be? I just spent an hour on it and wonder if I should just wipe it out and do it over.

Is there a meta package that will get this stuff and still be supported? I have to upgrade my laptop next and then my x-wife's machine after that and I REALLY want to do it the best way possible without having to jump through dozens of hoops.

I just want to make sure our machines will run well the next three years. I don't like the upgrade every 6 months thing. Just stable and working.

You'll want to enable the medibuntu repository:

The metapackage you want is kubuntu-restricted-extras, after enabling the medibuntu repository as per the message above. You probably will have to install libdvdcss separately for encrypted dvd's playback, It's the only thing not pulled by the metapackage, if memory helps.
