Cannot download photos from USB Mass Storage camera

digiKam has been purged (it does not work)
The camera supports USB Mass Storage (in Debian downloading used to succeed).

    Actions and reactions:
    1) Created catalog /media/camera
    2) Added the following line in fstab:
    /dev/sdb1 /media/camera msdos ro,noatime,user,auto 0 0
    3) Connected the camera to PC and turned the camera on; it displayed "ACCESS" for a while. On PC screen pop up window suggested "Open in new window" and "Nothing to do". Chose the first. Konqueror started with address "system:/media/camera" and message "Unknown error 50". Photos have not beed downloaded . How do download them?

The following is a relative fragment from syslog:

You shouldn't need/require adding an fstab entry for what is a 'hot pluggable' device. Did you add the fstab entry before plugging in the camera?

I'd take the fstab entry out, reboot, wait until you have a fully loaded desktop and then plug in the camera. When the pop-up window comes up, select Do Nothing. Then open System Menu > Storage Media and see if the camera is listed.
Windows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.

      Actions and reactions:
      1) Restored fstab. Left two previously created by myself catalogs "/media/camera" and "media/sdb1" untouched.
      2) Reboot.
      3) Connected the camera to PC with USB cable and then turned the camera on (it was in playback mode). "ACCESS" was displayed by the camera for a while.
      4) First the window with header "256M Removable Media" popped up and then the window with header "USB Mass Storage Interface" popped up. Two corresponding items have appeared on the desktop. Chose "Do Nothing" in the both windows.
      5) Opened System Menu > Storage Media and saw the camera listed. But when I left clicked on it, the window with header "system:/media - Konqueror" opened showing nothing inside.

Re: Cannot download photos from USB Mass Storage camera

        Tested:

HH running KDE 4.1 (real 4.1). No special fstab entries for my camera (Nikon CoolPix 5700).
Connected the camera and plugged into one of my USB ports on my USB hub (USB 1.1 ports).
Notification popped up telling me a new device had been connected. Let the window self close (this pop-up is different in KDE 4.1 than in KDE 3.5.9).
Clicked on K Menu > Computer > Volume (vfat) which is identified as /media/disk and Dolphin opened with this item opened for navigation. A folder and an index file are show. Click on the folder and I get another sub-folder. Click on it I have a listing of the pictures I've taken (listed as dscnxxxx.jpg files) with the thumbnail image displayed on the right side of the Dolphin navigation window.

I have no special 'camera' packages installed. This is the normal and expected behavior when one plugs in a digital camera (in playback/view mode).
Windows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.
