[running Hardy, on an HP Desktop]
More than anything else, this is a documentation problem, I think. More creeping geekism, and I'm bewildered that things are in the condition I found them.
PROBLEM: I'm in Firefox3, and I want to print a PDF version of a webpage. I do File > Print > ... and at this point what I see is OS dependent, 'cause I see something different in WinXP than in Kubuntu.
So, I select the PDF option in the modal window with which I'm presented.
Next...a long silence. I presume the PDF was created. There were no errors reported. But...where is it? I'm evidently supposed to know something which I clearly do not.
I go looking - in Firefox - for options to specify where it might be put. There are none. I conclude it must be an OS option.
In K-menu > System Settings > Search, I type PDF. Nothing. Not a single entry.
Calling up the Control Center module menu (via Taskbar widget), I repeat the search for "PDF". Nothing. Zip.
And that. folks, is fine documentation. I'm frankly incredulous.
OK...maybe I'm utterly missing something (although I have trouble imagining what). Going to the Kubuntu Forums, searching for "PDF location" I get to "Topic: How-To: Choose Custom Location and Filename with CUPS-PDF" - http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3093200.0
This is gold. The procedure it outlines perfectly meets my need. I'm delighted. But I really don't expect to have to drag the forum to find answers to problems so basic as to where in blazes a PDF generated by system print functions may be found.
NOW...I get genuinely pissy, I'll admit, when I run into overt documentation lapses with Kubuntu, which I use for HOURS every single day of my life. This one alone has cost me about 45 minutes. I like this OS a lot. I do want to help "the cause" when I can. So...
My question: If I want to move this forum-originated documentation - written by someone else (and capable of being rewritten by me, if needed) - into a more user-accessible place (please remember that your average user is NOT accustomed to searching forums for answers to Operating System problems - and likely never will be - a simple fact), what is my next move?
And if I want to file a "documentation bug", what is my best move?
I'm seeking to be advised by those who have a clearer view of the Big Picture than I have yet achieved. (And also save myself some time. I could go searching for the answer, but, believe it or not, I actually sat down to my computer this Friday night to get some work done. I need to get back to work.)
I'm very interested in anyone's thoughts, and will be grateful for any help you can offer, relative to my question.
