i don't know if you can get a free serial for it.
but vmware server is in the partner section.
    in adept, go to:
adept -> manage repositories -> third party software
and enable that section, fetch updates and the vmware server package should then be there.

Yes, you can get a free serial on their site if you install it out of the repo.

          it's none of those.
          enable the partner section.
          then refresh your packages' list.
the package you're looking for is called vmware-server.

                not there in hardy.
                removed.
                gone.
guess you'll have to install it by hand.
                or go back to gutsy.
                fond this in ubuntu forums.

Do I still get a free serial if I do it that way?

I think there is also a tar.gz on VM Wares site that one can download.

Or could I add the feisty repositories to my sources?

the how-to i found in ubuntu forums has a link to the registration page on vmware's site.
it also says it assumes you already have the vmware's .tar.gz.
                    so...
i gather you can get a free serial after registration.
and that you need to download the .tar.gz.

                    nah.
                    not a good idea.
                    don't do that.
you'd end up with multiple instances of the same packages, but with different dependencies.
and, believe me, you don't want to get yourself into that kind of mess.

my other machine has 7.10, could I get it frow there (/vap/cache/apt/archives) then build a local repo?

or is tar.gz better still? does tar.gz work on all distros? cuz deb is only for debian/*buntu, rpm io only for redhat. but if tar.gz works on all, it should be standard...

                        Re: Install VM Ware Server

tar.gz ins't a 'packaging scheme.' It's just an archive (file compression). What's in the archive is still platform dependent. If what's in the archive is a package for Redhat, then it's for Redhat. If for Debian, then Debian.

                          Re: Install VM Ware Server

there should be a common thing. so for example one of my systems has Ubuntu and another redhat, i could download one file and use it on both.

arnt linux executables just bin files in the end anyways?

I downloaded a program once and it was a bin. So are bins exclusive to the distro to?

And what was the other no for?
