[SOLVED] KDE 4.1 SystemSettings has no Admin Button

I've had this with all versions of KDE4 (currently running 4.1RC1 alongside KDE3). The System Settings Panel has no Administrator Mode button for any of the screens that require root access, consequently they're grayed out.

Is this by design? a known bug? peculiar to my system?

Access System Settings via kcontrol. Press Alt+F2 and type:

/usr/bin/kcontrol

Wow! that was quick thanks Snowhog.

Yah, I do know about KControl, but it doesn't address non KDE things such as user administration etc, plus I like the sparseness of Systems Admin, plus I was wondering how such a major piece of functionality had been broken for so long (4.01 - 4.1RC).

You identified the why in your own post above - 4.x is still not a final version; it is still being developed.

Ok, I presume it will be fixed someday then rather than being dropped.

I'm sure that most/all the glitches that are evident in KDE 4.x will be resolved when it is released as final. If it isn't at least as functional as KDE 3.5.9, well ...

KDE 4.1 RC1 Release Announcement

KDE 4.1-rc1 is meant for testing the upcoming KDE 4.1 release and to filter out last-minute bugs. As such, the KDE 4.1 is frozen for commits unless the patches have been reviewed and are bugfix only.

With the Itrepid/KDE 4.1: Alt + F2 and kdesudo systemsettings is working.

When I type kdesudo systemsettings, it comes up with the password box and then says "Command not found!" when I type my password. It's very frustrating because I would like to configure KDM. >.<

I believe the problem is that the KDE4 binaries are not in root's PATH. Ths (from memory) should work.

sudo /usr/lib/kde4/bin/systemsettings

sudo /usr/lib/kde4/bin/systemsettings

And remember, that if launching a GUI app as 'root' you should use:

kdesu /usr/lib/kde4/bin/application_name

You would think that such a simple thing as a fully functional path in KDE 4.1 would be incorporated at this point. :P
