DVD stops playing in Kaffeine (SOLVED)

    Hello.

I recently installed Kubuntu 8.04 (for i386) and I have a problem with Kaffeine, it cannot play original DVD's!

    The problem consists in this:
-Playback begins normally (the name of the DVD appears on the top-left of the window)
    -The FBI warning appears
    -Another screen appears
-When it's supposed to bring the main menu, it suddenly stops and the word "Stop" appears n the top-left of the window.

The weirdest thing is that it doesn't give away any kind of error message...

Anyways, I used Kubuntu 7.04 and 7.10 in the past, so, I already knew how to add the medibuntu repository and such.. so I did all of the following:

1.-Go to Add/Remove Programs, enable all the sources and download Kubuntu restricted extras.

2.-Add Medibuntu to your sources.list, as well as its GPG key to your keyring. Make sure to use the correct sources.list that corresponds to your current distribution.

    Ubuntu 8.04 "Hardy Heron":

    sudo wget http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/hardy.list -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list

    Then, add the GPG Key:

    wget -q http://packages.medibuntu.org/medibuntu-key.gpg -O- | sudo apt-key add - && sudo apt-get update

3.-if you have added the entire Medibuntu repository, you just need to install the libdvdcss2 package using APT:

    sudo apt-get install libdvdcss2

4.-If you have added the entire Medibuntu repository, install the Non-Native Media Formats package using APT.

For i386, the package is called w32codecs:

    sudo apt-get install w32codecs

5.-Go to Adept Manager and install the following packages:

    libdvdnav4
    libxine1-all-plugins
    libxine1-plugins

I did all of the above, and still got the same problem, all DVDs stop playing without giving out an error message....

    Can anyone help? Thanks...

Compare what you've already done to my instructions for getting commercial DVDs to work in Kaffeine here. These instructions work.

The only difference I found is that I missed this package.

So, I installed it... and, the same problem keeps harassing me...

Do you have any other media players installed (ex. Dragon Player, Totem, etc?) If you do, will they play your DVD? Is it just one DVD you're having problems with or a bunch of them?

Re: DVD stops playing in Kaffeine

Someone told me that the problem could be the disk in particular, so I did some tests with a few DVDs from my collection, and I got interesting results.

4 disks stop playback immediately , they don't even show the FBI warnings.

1 disk showed the warnings, but immediately the playback stops after that.

5 disks showed the warnings and another screen after them, but playback stops when the main menu should show up (this is the problem I described on my first post)

1 disk did show the main menu! but the playback stops after selecting any option.

Surprisingly, 5 other disks played fine, no errors whatsoever, and the playback never stopped. That makes me think... the codecs do work, I can play some DVDs, but what about the others?

To digimars: I only have Kaffeine, but I'll try installing those other players, I'll let you know if they work.

          Thanks.

            Update:

I installed Dragon Player and did some tests, the results were exactly like the ones in Kaffeine, a few DVDs played well, while most of them didn't even made it to the main menu.

I decided to give a try to Totem, so I installed it from the Add/Remove Programs repository... And well... I do not know where is it or how can I access it...

              Update 2:

I found the Totem player, but the situation is almost the same... It still plays a few dvds, but the program sends an error message when trying most of them.

But hey, at least I'm getting error messages now!

              Totem shows this message:
Totem was not able to play this disc. Failed to find mountpoint for /dev/scd0

Kaffeine now shows this message (it didn't show up before):
This DVD Video is encrypted. To be able to watch it you will need to install libdvdcss by running from a console: sudo /usr/share/doc/kaffeine/install-css.sh. In some countries it is illegal to install the decryption software without permission from the video copyright holder.

That's weird, in the Adept Manager it says I have libdvdcss2 installed...

Re: DVD stops playing in Kaffeine

                SOLVED!!!

I did just what Kaffeine told me to do:

                On the konsole:

                sudo /usr/share/doc/kaffeine/install-css.sh

And it showed me a warning telling that I was going to downgrade my version of libdvdcss... I didn't care (I didn't have the option to cancel the process anywayy...)

When it finished, I opened one of the non-working DVD's with Kaffeine, and, it worked!!! I tried Totem... and it worked too!!! I could now play all my DVD's!!!!!!

Anyways.. The Kubuntu Update thing appeared on my taskbar and told me that there was an upgrade to libdvdcss... I was in the mood for some experimenting, so I upgraded...

When the upgrade finished, i tried to open the DVD with both players. Both failed...

So, I downgraded again my library, and I can now watch my favorite TV Shows.

Thanks too everyone for the help!!!

                Any comments?

Good job. Learn from this experience. It's a very good idea to keep a log of changes you make to your system. That way, when something 'strange' occurs after a change, you will know what you did.

Re: DVD stops playing in Kaffeine (SOLVED)

I solved the problem by changing the dvd device, try this :-

                    start kaffeine
                    click settings
                    click xine engine parameters
                    click media

look at the device used for dvd playback
mine originally said /dev/dvd change this to /dev/scd0 or /dev/scd1

to be sure which one to use either right click on the dvd's desktop icon choose properties and look at the meta info or open konqueror, go to storage media and do the same there

                    hope this helps

Thanks Snowhog, I'll try doing that, it seems very helpful.

And also thanks to Paul0, I did what you wrote, and I could upgrade libdvdcss2 successfully, now I can watch my favorite DVDs with the last version of the library!!!

                      Many thanks to all!

Re: DVD stops playing in Kaffeine (SOLVED)

Thank you Paul0. I ran into this problem after upgrading my honeys comp to HH. After reinstalling needed packages (they were installed before upgrade not sure why they went away) I read your post and my device was also DVD and not the correct scd0. TY again!!!! But what if you have more than one DVD device. I have a burner and a ROM installed. Am I limited to one device for playback?
