hibernation given as option, but not functional

Have very recently upgraded to Hardy. I'm running an HP desktop workstation. I see that Hibernation is still offered as an option when shutting down. It LOOKS like it's writing the current desktop state to HD, then shuts down. Then upon powerup, it simply hangs, right after showing the Kunbuntu name and progress bar - just like it did with the previous Kubuntu version.

I don't understand any of this. Why offer an option which doesn't work?

The Control Center has NOTHING on hibernation. System Settings - ditto. KDE help center? Ha! That's not exactly helpful. Must be more Secret Knowledge, and I didn't get the code book. If I'm not looking in the right places for help, where SHOULD I look? Why in blazes isn't this documented somewhere accessible?

I don't know what to do at this point to get. Can anyone help?

Kpowersave is the package you want.

It offers "Suspend to RAM" and "Suspend to Disk". I have had good success with S2RAM, not so much with S2Disk.

Hibernation works for me on my laptop, but I've heard from others that it doesn't work. It may be some video card incompatibility, but I'm not sure.
